LLC members serve as tutors at Providence’s Veazie Street Elementary School. Starting in September 2025, we will tutor reading at Harry Kizirian Elementary School.
Volunteers work with students who are behind in their language, reading, and math skills, helping to improve their learning outcomes, which encourages attendance and general enjoyment of school.
Each September, LLC offers a free two-hour Zoom course to help people interested in tutoring be ready to take part in this activity. It is taught as part of the LLC fall schedule by our mentor and advisor, Janice Golden. This program is ongoing and prior tutoring experience is not required. Email us for more information.
2024-2025 School Year Update
Last year, Veazie Street School had the highest rate of improved math scores (16%) in the Providence School District. It is heartening to see how much the tutors’ efforts and time have aided the students. Reading scores have improved, also as have the scores of students who are dealing with English as their second language.
In addition to Veazie Street School, we will be helping at the City’s after school program.
Thank you to the excellent tutor volunteers for persevering and showing up—we are making a difference!
