SUMMARY:Brown Bag Webinar w/ Joe Petteruti\, Author
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual “Celebrate Ourselves” spotlights LLC Member Joe Petteruti\, Author of A Night She’d Remember: My Grandmother’s Experience on the Titanic \nThis is the story of Joe Petteruti’s maternal grandmother\, Bertha Mulvihill. An Irish immigrant\, she arrived in Rhode Island in 1905. In late 1911\, after living and working in Providence for six years\, she returned to her hometown of Coosan\, Ireland to visit her large family. At the last minute\, Bertha purchased a third-class steerage ticket for the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in April of 1912\, from Queenstown\, Ireland back to Providence. Viewing it as an exciting adventure\, little did she know the tragic fate that awaited. \nJoe will recount his grandmother’s experience as a third-class passenger on the “unsinkable” Titanic\, sharing her perspective of that unforgettable night\, A Night She’d Remember. \nJoe Petteruti\, a Providence native\, has been a member of the Lifelong Learning Collaborative since 2010. He currently serves on three LLC committees and enjoys taking LLC courses. His favorite is the memoir writing class. Joe’s book\, A Night She’d Remember: My Grandmother’s Experience on the Titanic is the story about his maternal grandmother who survived the sinking of the Titanic. His book started in a 2015 memoir writing class as a short highlight. During the pandemic\, Joe continued writing and he says it is thanks to his coordinator encouraging him that led to its being published in 2022.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Webinar w/ Charles Clarkson\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Birds have been evolving on our planet for roughly 1.6 million years. During this period\, they have radiated into over 10\,000 species and can be found in nearly every habitat that exists. Aside from bringing us great joy as they nest in our backyards\, visit our feeders and fill wild spaces\, birds provide countless ecosystem services. They pollinate our plants\, control pest populations\, remove decomposing organic material and spread seeds far and wide\, thereby creating new habitats across the globe. \nCharles Clarkson will tell us about the amazing things birds do\, what we stand to lose in a warming world as many of our avian populations decline rapidly and how Audubon is working to reverse these declines. \nCharles Clarkson\, PhD\, is the Director of Avian Research for the Audubon Society of Rhode Island where he is leading efforts to conserve bird populations across all properties Audubon manages. His work includes establishing a baseline dataset on bird abundance and distribution as well as targeted research on the impacts of pesticides to nesting and migrating birds.

It is the critical alliance that established 50 years of peace between the Indigenous tribes that had farmed\, fished\, and hunted the region for millennia – and the English settlers arriving on the Mayflower. Sowams is also ground zero for the fracturing of that alliance during King Philip’s War\, a devastating conflict that ultimately encompassed Indigenous and colonial communities throughout New England. Dr. David Weed\, who is leading an effort to create a new National Heritage Area in East Bay RI and nearby Massachusetts\, will describe the events in the 17th century that has shaped the complex history of the region up to the present day. (He says the story about this is best told by author Nathaniel Philbrick in Mayflower: A Story of Courage\, Community\, and War.) \nDr. David Weed is a retired clinical psychologist living in Warren\, RI\, who became interested in the history of the 17th century in and around his community starting in 2007 with a widely accessed web site about King Philip’s War.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lecture Webinar w/ Rick Beyer – Author\, Documentary Filmmaker\, Historian
DESCRIPTION:The Ghost Army of World War II: Call them warriors of illusion\, or a symphony of subterfuge – During World War II\, a handpicked group of GIs landed in France to conduct a secret mission. The men of the Twenty-Third Headquarters Special Troops\, known as the Ghost Army\, used inflatable tanks\, sound effects\, fake radio transmissions and even impersonation to fool the enemy about the strength and location of American units. And this extraordinary deception unit has a Woonsocket connection – many of their inflatables were manufactured right here! Author and documentary filmmaker\, Rick Beyer\, presents this amazing story in an engaging multimedia presentation that includes photos\, maps\, video clips and other materials. Many of the soldiers were artists\, and Beyer weaves their wartime art into this incredible tale of creativity being used to save lives. \nRick Beyer is an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, a New York Times bestselling author and a long-time history enthusiast. A new edition of the book The Ghost Army of World War II was published in October. Rick also produced and directed the award-winning PBS documentary The Ghost Army. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lecture feat. Professor Stephen Porder
DESCRIPTION:Professor Stephen Porder\, Brown University and Author of Elemental: How five elements changed Earth’s past and will shape our future \n“Climate Change: Local Solutions to a Global Problem” \nHuman-caused climate change is the defining challenge for society in the 21st century and is the world around us. Rising to its challenge will require mitigation\, to slow the pace of change\, and adaptation\, to build resilience to the changes that we cannot stop. \nIn this talk\, Professor Stephen Porder will cover the basic science of climate change\, its drivers\, and the path towards a resilient\, zero-emissions future. He will highlight things individuals can do to dramatically lower their climate footprint\, and opportunities that Rhode Island has to take a leadership role in moving towards a more stable climate future. He will discuss some of the difficult tradeoffs that will need to be considered to keep warming\, and thus the need for adaptation\, to a minimum. This talk aims to spark exciting ideas about the ways in which we can all become a part of the solution to this unprecedented problem. \nStephen Porder is Associate Provost for Sustainability and Professor of Ecology\, Evolution\, and Organismal Biology at Brown University\, where he is a fellow in the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lecture feat. Alan Hoffman\, Translator
DESCRIPTION:Alan Hoffman\, Translator of Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825\n“Lafayette and the Farewell Tour: Odyssey of an American Idol” \nContemporaries thought that Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America in 1824 and 1825 was a unique event in our history\, indeed\, of world history. During the Tour\, this 67-year-old former major general of the Continental Army visited all 24 states and Washington City and became a household name among roughly 12\,000\,000 Americans. Yet today\, the Tour seems to have vanished from American history\, and Americans are by and large unaware of it. \nAlan Hoffman\, translator of Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825\, a first-hand account of the Tour written by Lafayette’s private secretary\, will describe the Tour and explain why 80 cities\, towns and counties were named for Lafayette as well as streets and roads everywhere\, including Lafayette streets in Providence and Pawtucket. \nA retired lawyer\, Alan Hoffman serves as president of the American Friends of Lafayette and the Massachusetts Lafayette Society.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lecture Dr. Isaac Ginis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Isaac Ginis\, Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography \nCoastal communities are at increased risk due to extreme weather conditions and sea-level rise under a changing climate. In New England\, the most common coast-shaping storms are nor’easters and hurricanes with strong winds and heavy precipitation. There is limited information on how the impacts of both types of storms and SLR may be amplified. This information gap inhibits our ability to plan properly and will likely lead to under-informed and ineffective adaptation measures. \nDr. Ginis will discuss the coastal hazards\, analysis\, modeling\, and prediction (CHAMP) system developed through the Department of Homeland Security and NOAA and its applications\, from real-time emergency response to longer-term planning. The project engages local and state governments to ensure models and vulnerability assessments support specific stakeholder management concerns and affect decision-making today and in the future. \nDr. Isaac Ginis is a professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography. His research efforts have resulted in pioneering advances in modeling the tropical cyclone-ocean interaction\, significantly improving hurricane intensity forecast skills. Dr. Ginis has contributed to developing the hurricane models used by the U.S. National Hurricane Center and Joint Typhoon Warming Center for operational forecasting of tropical cyclones worldwide.
