SUMMARY:Webinar Lecture w/ William Kole\, Journalist\, Author
DESCRIPTION:William J. Kole\, Award-winning journalist and author of The Big 100: The New World of Super-Aging\nLiving to 100 Whether You Want To Or Not \nAsk anyone how they feel about living to 100\, and you’re sure to get a spirited response. Some are eager to live as long as they can. Many worry about outliving their children\, their friends\, and their money. “It depends\,” others will answer: “Will I still have my health\, my mobility\, and my mind?” \nNews Flash: A triple-digit lifespan may well be your destiny whether you’d like it or not. We’re in the midst of what the United Nations calls a “longevity revolution.” More of us than ever before are living to 100. The number of centenarians is projected to increase eight times over by 2050\, and half of all 5-year-olds alive right now are expected to hit the century mark. \nHow is this tectonic demographic shift changing society? What will it be like to live into our 100s in a world that still values youth over advanced age? And is there anything we can do today to ensure our extra tomorrows are worth living? Award-winning journalist and author William J. Kole answers those pressing questions and others as he shares insights from his critically acclaimed book. \nWilliam J. Kole\, author of The Big 100: The New World of Super-Aging\, recently retired as New England editor for The Associated Press but continues to work as an editor for Axios. An acclaimed former foreign correspondent who has reported from North America\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle East\, Kole was a 2022 fellow in aging journalism at Columbia University in New York and at the National Press Foundation in Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Brown Bag Webinar w/ Joe Petteruti\, Author
DESCRIPTION:The 6th Annual “Celebrate Ourselves” spotlights LLC Member Joe Petteruti\, Author of A Night She’d Remember: My Grandmother’s Experience on the Titanic \nThis is the story of Joe Petteruti’s maternal grandmother\, Bertha Mulvihill. An Irish immigrant\, she arrived in Rhode Island in 1905. In late 1911\, after living and working in Providence for six years\, she returned to her hometown of Coosan\, Ireland to visit her large family. At the last minute\, Bertha purchased a third-class steerage ticket for the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in April of 1912\, from Queenstown\, Ireland back to Providence. Viewing it as an exciting adventure\, little did she know the tragic fate that awaited. \nJoe will recount his grandmother’s experience as a third-class passenger on the “unsinkable” Titanic\, sharing her perspective of that unforgettable night\, A Night She’d Remember. \nJoe Petteruti\, a Providence native\, has been a member of the Lifelong Learning Collaborative since 2010. He currently serves on three LLC committees and enjoys taking LLC courses. His favorite is the memoir writing class. Joe’s book\, A Night She’d Remember: My Grandmother’s Experience on the Titanic is the story about his maternal grandmother who survived the sinking of the Titanic. His book started in a 2015 memoir writing class as a short highlight. During the pandemic\, Joe continued writing and he says it is thanks to his coordinator encouraging him that led to its being published in 2022.
