SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lecture Dr. Isaac Ginis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Isaac Ginis\, Professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography \nCoastal communities are at increased risk due to extreme weather conditions and sea-level rise under a changing climate. In New England\, the most common coast-shaping storms are nor’easters and hurricanes with strong winds and heavy precipitation. There is limited information on how the impacts of both types of storms and SLR may be amplified. This information gap inhibits our ability to plan properly and will likely lead to under-informed and ineffective adaptation measures. \nDr. Ginis will discuss the coastal hazards\, analysis\, modeling\, and prediction (CHAMP) system developed through the Department of Homeland Security and NOAA and its applications\, from real-time emergency response to longer-term planning. The project engages local and state governments to ensure models and vulnerability assessments support specific stakeholder management concerns and affect decision-making today and in the future. \nDr. Isaac Ginis is a professor at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography. His research efforts have resulted in pioneering advances in modeling the tropical cyclone-ocean interaction\, significantly improving hurricane intensity forecast skills. Dr. Ginis has contributed to developing the hurricane models used by the U.S. National Hurricane Center and Joint Typhoon Warming Center for operational forecasting of tropical cyclones worldwide.
